Chicken Tales

I really enjoy watching our chickens peck around the yard, I'll admit that it is sometimes annoying when they follow you around constantly, and the endless amounts of poo everywhere, but we are lucky that there are no critters around that hunt them.
A month or so ago they seemed to slack off of laying their eggs, around when we brought in 8 new year old hens. Well last week we decided to cut the suckers that grew on the stumps in an area behind the coup....this is what we found, 2 large nests of about 15-17 eggs each of varing degrees of freshness....not sure if it was the new to us ones or the old ones, it was kind of nice to find their hiding place and good to know that they were laying...somewhere. We've also caught them laying eggs on the new hay in the hay barn.
And my last tale....our son Ethan has a summer job working with a road crew that takes him around the province so he is gone for a few weeks at a time. We were busy Sunday so he and his friends went grocery shopping for his food for the next couple of weeks, I guess they were in such a hurry when they got home they just left the bags of groceries in the driveway, because he was leaving in less than an hour. Yup, you guessed it the "ladies" got into the bags, and ate his bread and pecked a large hole into his cantaloupe!! Now it was not their fault.....free food!!!!

PS they do stay locked up until midmorning if I'm home, to lay in their house, if I work they are out at 8:45am. The reason why they are out is because they pick at each other something terrible....and now the feathers will not grow back on their butts....trying to prevent the newer ones from being bald butt chickens.

A lonely little Sunflower.

While away camping the last few days, we took a walk on the beach and happened upon a lonely little Sunflower growing all by itself at the edge of the grass near the rocks. What a lucky little flower to have such a scenic view....low tide isn't very pretty though!
Standing proudly....
