Doggie Tales or Tails....

Lots of comings and going here at Precious Acres.....
Last month we had a lead on a dog that was to be given away, but we were second in line, he was already promised to another family. We went to visit him anyway, he was very timid, didn't like men, his owner felt she could not devote the time to him that he needed. She is a single mom, so Major had to find a new home.
Major went to a family who had young children......so if we couldn't get Major we thought we'd look into other options.
A couple of days later we took Shadow in to join our family.......his owner to say the least was a KOOK! She stayed for 3 hours to make sure we were a good fit. She looked in bathroom cupboards, let him all over our furniture and let him grab MY stuffed animals and did not say a word but being such good quiet people we are let it go...WEELLL!
We took him in the car to the park for a walk, where he pulled all the way, he was good in the car though. Bought him lots of food and treats. We could not leave him unattended for one second, we had to take turns looking after outdoor critters, he was wild over the chickens. So we settled in for the evening, grandson came for a visit, didn't dare set him down for fear he'd be jumped on. We put a barricade up in the hall doorway so the cats could have some peace and quiet in the bedroom, he just plowed right on through them. He ate 2 stuffed animals and stole garbage out of the closed garbage can. My final breaking point was when he cornered all 4 cats in the bedroom and they were literally throwing themselves against the wall to get away....I had a melt down and one of us had to go! So after 12 hours Shadow went back to his owner, and I said never again, we do not need a dog.
A few days later Major's owner called and the people who took him didn't feel as though he was going to work out, they had a female dog who he would not leave alone. Were we still interested....she was leaving for England in a few hours for Christmas and didn't have time to make arrangements. So.........Major is settling in nicely! He was crate trained and stays in the porch on the mat or in the hall. Comes in when invited, and hasn't chewed anything! Is learning to walk on a leash and is working on not bothering the kitties. He is a 13 month old Bernese Mountain Dog.
I still feel bad about Shadow it was not his fault he didn't have any manners! Major has some trust issues but we feel as though he will become a great friend. Welcome home sweet boy!

Christmas decorating

I finally decided to put up some Christmas decorations, figured I'd start outside with my feathered friends. Actually it was a stick tree that I put in the house a couple of years ago to decorate before it was time to put up the real tree. Well I drug it up out of the basement and placed it where I thought it would go and the little cat "Baby I" ( for Iris- who turned out to be a boy) started to eat the tree and choke on it so I put it out the patio door where the feeders are so the birds could rest on it while waiting for a free spot on the feeder. It isn't a real good shot but it does look quite nice if I do say so myself! And the birds liked it!
When I got up to feed the animals this morning this is how it looked, I guess a little taste of what is to come. Hope everyone is havng a wonderful weekend!!

Finally the rain has stopped....

These first photos were taken in the Spring at my parents cabin on a river.
Over the years we've had lots and lots of fires in the fireplace, and lots of hotdogs and marshmallows. Yum!

The cutest gazebo ever.

Mom and I walked her dogs in to see if the river was high with all the flooding everwhere. No fire today!

Steps are under water, and somehow......I had to walk back to the car with two wet sneakers and two wet cheeks. Butt is a little sore....
The furniture is floating, at least it can't get out and float away. Several bridges were lost and most are on watch to make sure they do not get swept away before the water goes down.
They say that snow won't come until the rivers are full......well .......I think they are FULL!

A very wet weekend!

We have had nothing but RAIN, this photo is of a path through our property, we won't be walking here anytime soon!
This photo is of the water running from a culvert also on to our land, the fluffy white in the center of the photo is water that should not be here.... looks like a lake! Looks much more impressive in real life.

Finally a little sun to get out and look around.... my bleeding heart is still blooming it is 13*C today, but we all know what is around the corner.......

Signed Sealed and Delivered

I finally finished the quilt for Landen, since he was supposed to be born yesterday by c-section, I was right on time. Anthony and Tammy brought the new bundle home from the hospital on Monday and came to Granny and Grampy's yesterday, so I had the quilt all washed up and ready. I'm not the quilter, Mom is so she had the panel and backing and quilt batting. I finished quilting it Thursday and I took it to her to bind it and when Tammy went into labor, Mom waited to sew on pink or blue.
We can not end a post with out a cute mug shot!!

Almost impossible!

My parents have 4 wonderful grandchildren! We've never thought to get together for a photo.
We decided to try it this afternoon, for a surprise Christmas gift. Weeellll......lets just say my boys are the older ones, and they sit where you put them and look when you ask....the little ones are my brothers and I've forgotten how little ones act. Well Bryan did not want his picture taken and Rachel was getting sleepy. We took about 100 pictures with 3 cameras, and not sure if we got anything that will be suitable to enlarge.
We went to our closed campground, which is across the harbor from town. These are my boys, Anthony and Ethan.

Rachel is just 2 and quite the little sweetie, she just decides to lay down in the road, Bryan is
4 1/2 and sorry to say no photo.
Happy Fall!

Enjoy your day!

Our last camping trip of the season.

Last weekend we took our last camping trip of the season, we went to Thomas Raddall Provincial Park, about 40 minutes away. We walked on the beach and searched for shells and pretty rocks.

Someone who had walked before us made a beautiful inukshuk.

After our usual camping treat for breakfast bacon, eggs and waffles, we had a little visitor. He really liked the waffles and syrup. Keep in mind that my camera doesn't have much of a zoom, so Mr Squirrel was very tame! He had a mosquito biting him and it was all I could do to keep from waving it away. He probably went back to his little home and licked his sticky toes all afternoon. Some may be grossed out from having a wild dirty squirrel on their picnic table....it at least was not a snake or a spider!!! And I did boil lots of water for dishes.
So ends our camping season......... .......Hello FAll~

Chicken Tales

I really enjoy watching our chickens peck around the yard, I'll admit that it is sometimes annoying when they follow you around constantly, and the endless amounts of poo everywhere, but we are lucky that there are no critters around that hunt them.
A month or so ago they seemed to slack off of laying their eggs, around when we brought in 8 new year old hens. Well last week we decided to cut the suckers that grew on the stumps in an area behind the coup....this is what we found, 2 large nests of about 15-17 eggs each of varing degrees of freshness....not sure if it was the new to us ones or the old ones, it was kind of nice to find their hiding place and good to know that they were laying...somewhere. We've also caught them laying eggs on the new hay in the hay barn.
And my last tale....our son Ethan has a summer job working with a road crew that takes him around the province so he is gone for a few weeks at a time. We were busy Sunday so he and his friends went grocery shopping for his food for the next couple of weeks, I guess they were in such a hurry when they got home they just left the bags of groceries in the driveway, because he was leaving in less than an hour. Yup, you guessed it the "ladies" got into the bags, and ate his bread and pecked a large hole into his cantaloupe!! Now it was not their fault.....free food!!!!

PS they do stay locked up until midmorning if I'm home, to lay in their house, if I work they are out at 8:45am. The reason why they are out is because they pick at each other something terrible....and now the feathers will not grow back on their butts....trying to prevent the newer ones from being bald butt chickens.

A lonely little Sunflower.

While away camping the last few days, we took a walk on the beach and happened upon a lonely little Sunflower growing all by itself at the edge of the grass near the rocks. What a lucky little flower to have such a scenic view....low tide isn't very pretty though!
Standing proudly....

Happy Birthday Canada!

I know that I'm a little late...busy weekend. Thursday we finally got the tomatoes planted in the garaden, also carrots, peas and beans. We'll see if they grow this late. We don't have festivities in our town for Canada Day, in a couple of weeks we have Founders Days, a whole weekend of fun and fireworks. Max had his own party! Hope everyone had a great holiday! Enjoy your week...

Silly indulgence?

I set out thismorning to do a few things while waiting for the bank to open I thought I'd stop at Frenchys, our very well known 2nd hand store, there are several across Nova Scotia. My husband is very tolerant of my "habit" and somethings are totally useless, well not today this is what I found, I think it was ment to be....I love Eeyore, he is the color of my Emily and my Max has the same personality as Eeyore, plus his little pillow has January on it, my birth month....so it was ment to be, correct?
Of course I bought some other items, hubby a pair of Dockers pants, son a tee shirt and future Grandbaby a Beatrix Potter sleeper, plus Eeyore all for $12.15 ( including taxes, of course) oh I forgot I also picked up a tank top for myself. Over the past month I have also collected shoes, dress and a sweater and pruse to wear to a wedding tomorrow. I can not remember when the last time I bought something for myself at a store brand new. *I do buy new undies and bras*, that would be gross!!
I hope you like my little find, I was so excited I had to share....it doesn't take much to excite me!
Happy Days!

Lots and lots of Lady Slippers

This evening my husband and I took a stroll through our local campground and we found a very large patch of lady slippers, actually we found a few large patches of the very pretty flowers. It is not a very nice weekend to camp, rained all afternoon and drizzlie now, so not so surprising that only 3 sites out of 62 were occupied. We will wait for a nice sunny weekend to go over camping, just walking through though we wanted to stay. Hope your weekend is sunny!

Writers block...............

I am so ashamed that I haven't had any interest in my blog for quite some time. There doesn't seem to be anything worth while to blog about. I can hear you now....that is if someone actually is reading this....there must be something to tell. Well here goes.........
Spring came my trees bloomed, lilac, apple, cherry, snowball, quince. I mostly have lilies planted so not many flowers to tell about. I did buy some new ones but waiting for the last frost to plant. I bought a new hosta of a different color leaf, a blanket flower, bell flower, Jacob's ladder, and hubby 2 blueberry trees for Father's Day.
We bought a small plastic greenhouse, I haven't planted anything yet due to frost risk...I am so new at this garden thing! I did plant tomato seeds in the house and put them in the greenhouse each day and bring them in the house at night, they are doing quite well.
We had planned to go camping this past long weekend but, first son, now 20, suddenly moved home with girlfriend and they are living in the camper. They have been here since April 28th. They are in the process of buying and fixing up their first home. Replacing bathroom fixtures and painting, but he is trying to do as much as he can and is learning by watching and helping. We have been going to yard sales to pick up furniture, and family is parting with odds and ends to help out.
We are adjusting to fact that we are going to be Grandparents in November.....and will stand behind them and help where ever we can.
Writing this much has taken 1 1/2 hours, lots of writing, deleting and rewriting. I guess I have too much time on my hands, yea.. still not back to work.
Just a little glimpse into what has been going on in my neck of the woods.
Thanks for asking about me, you know who you are, I've sat around having my own pitty party for too long. I'mmmm back!!

Mayflowers

We took a stroll along our paths in search of Mayflowers. They have one of my favorite scents for flowers, they are also Nova Scotia's provincial flower. In places there are blankets of them all covered in leaves, amazing how they can bloom under all the leaves. The vase even matches.
Another sign of Spring!!

Daffodils are blooming!

Finally my daffodils have bloomed, I cut a bunch for the dining table for Easter dinner, they are so pretty. The fence is working well the chickens haven't been in for awhile. Happy belated Easter!!

My gardeners are hard at work!

My little garden helpers have been busy loosening up the soil, crocuses are blooming in front of the tall rock. The daffodils are getting a little taller. I guess the fence isn't working too well! We are at the end of some absolutely lovely weather, the weather lady is saying back to normal temps....low single digits and some much needed rain. That is ok, as it is officially Spring!!!
HAPPY SPRING!!

Thank you fellow bloggers....

It is fun to learn about fellow bloggers and their "neck of the woods". I enjoy visiting everyone's blog. Learning a little of this and that about everyone. I am putting some information to good use.
I hope no one minds if they get mentioned here...."From My Front Porch in the Mountains" had a terrible thing happen to Annie - she choked on a carrot - thankfully she is fine. The past several months we've been feeding the donkeys ground flax mixed with their chopped carrots at bedtime. I t seemed to be quite hard to swallow. Since I read about Annie awhile back, I've been pureeing their carrots and mixing it with water and the flax, making a mash. 2/3 cup carrot, 1/3 cup flax and 1/2 cup water....they love it, and gobble it right down. Max has a , not a split, but a ...what word am I looking for... a .....chip that peels up toward his hair line on his hoof. So our ferrier said it couldn't hurt to give flax to Max, supposed to encourage growth.
My other honorable mention is " Flat Creek Farm" my Emily donkey hates to have her feet done and to be needled and take her wormer and to have her halter put on...get the message! She is still my princess!! Well everyone was due to get wormed this week, Cherokee is really good about everything, so is Max, so we needed a new plan for "princess", awhile back Flat Creek said she puts her wormer on graham crackers.....well they had never had graham crackers...and they loved it. We split the wormer into 2 daily doses, so 2 days in a row they ate their new treat with hidden wormer.~~~~~Thank you , I really enjoy both of your blogs!!

A weather update, we're having another snow storm........think Spring

It is beginning to look....

...a lot like Spring! I know it is way too early though.

I have been on my lay off now for 2 weeks, and I somehow thought it would be more fun, I'm hoping when the snow leaves there will be things to do...like rake and tidy up the yard from winter winds.

We had some terrible winds through the night and lots and lots of rain, so I'm happy to say that I can see more ...mud...at least it isn't snow.

Have a great weekend all !!!!

A promising sign?

I found this little surprise in a garden against the house....lilies!!
These are daffodils in a garden next to the barn, they are peeking out of the snow!! I collect quartz rocks....and plant them everywhere. We are starting to have some above 0*C temps...you can see the snow melt. A little glimmer of hope.......

Look what was in my yard thismorning!

I think someone got the address wrong...I did not order this, about a foot of fresh snow fell over night. This shot is taken out of my livingroom window into what I call the front yard only because it faces the road through the trees.
And this is out of the patio door into the side yard looking at the apple tree....poor apple tree!
Have a lovely day!
Looking forward to SPRING...............

Where oh where is Spring!

I see it has been a long time since I've posted anything. I find it really hard to have something interesting to write about, so I don't write anything.

Well this wasn't a good week, Wednesday I had to see my Doctor about my blood work , he put me on a pill for Diabetes...really sucks...I love my sweets! And then I went to work and my boss informed me that as of the 11th I will be laid off...for an unknown amount of time. We haven't seen the ground since December, what am I going to do with all this time and too much cold and snow to do anything outside. It has been below normal temps for the past 2 weeks...we are not used to this cold for so long.

Patiently waiting for Spring..............

Snow fun!

I'm a couple of days late but...Happy New Year!! We've had a little snow 20-24 inches in places.
That is quite a bit a once around here, usually rains off by now. We had a beautiful day for digging out. Yesterday we only had 1/2 the snow Ethan and I made a snowman for the critters in their field.
Max thought it was cool, he ate all the carrot decorations! Then stripped it of scarf and hat. He had great fun.

Cherokee thought maybe the carrots were on the inside, and totally destroyed it....gone in less than an hour~at least they had some fun....
